Victor
Victoria
This
film is extremely good and fun to sing along to as well. It
stars Julie Andrews as Victoria, the starving soprano who after
meeting Toddy played by Robert Redford, becomes a woman pretending
to be a man pretending to be a woman. This interesting scenario
comes to it's full genderbending potential when Victoria falls
in love with a night club owner from Chicago played by James
Garner. This has hilarious consequences when he falls for her
too. Set in pre war Paris this film does it's best to explore
the stereo types normally associated with gays and transsexuals.
As a cabaret star of the thirties Julie Andrews has some fantastic
songs to sing including a poignant rendition of 'Crazy World'
and a stunning duet with Robert Redford. The ending of this
film is one of the best of I have ever seen (no joke). I hope
that I haven't given too much of the plot away but the best
bits of this film do need a little bit of background information.
